Visit the site of the first official call for American independence

Halifax in eastern North Carolina is home to the Halifax Resolves, the first official action for independence by any colony. Halifax was the meeting place of the state’s Fourth Provincial Congress in 1776, and the historic structures that preserve the identity of this important colonial port comprise Historic Halifax. The site offers an audiovisual presentation, exhibits, guided tours and displays depicting the history of the town. In the center of the state, Mecklenburg County claims its own declaration that pre-dates the call for American independence, but its validity has yet to be resolved.
